The Heart of the Matter
7/21/2011 - The Heart of the Matter
Gary Albright thought he was in good health. He has no family history of heart problems and has maintained the same weight for more than a decade. The 61 year old director of the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum was having a typical day when he suddenly began feeling light-headed. As he got to the local hospital they immediately realized he was having a heart attack. A helicopter transported him to Adventist Medical Center’s Northwest Regional Heart Center and upon arrival he was under the care of cardiologist Dr. Brad Titus.
Dr. Titus placed a tiny device about the width of a drinking straw into the patient. The Impella device is the world’s smallest heart pump. It kept Gary’s blood flowing to his body while the Northwest Regional Heart Center placed a stent to open up his coronary arteries and restore blood flow.
Gary was discharged from the hospital just 48 hours later and returned to work the next day. Today, he’s is enjoying life on the coast and remains grateful for the technology and skill which saved his life.
