PORTLAND, ORE. -- Adventist Medical Center (AMC) has received the Community Value Index® (CVI) Five-Star hospital award for the third consecutive year. Developed by Cleverley and Associates, the national recognition signifies AMC's dedication to meeting the healthcare needs of the community in a financially responsible, efficient and effective manner.

"Making sure the community receives the safest and most affordable care is our first priority. Our focus is centered on improving the outcomes of care and creating a safe, comfortable, healing environment for patient care," said David Russell, vice president of business development for AMC. "Through the years, our hospital has rigorously evaluated its overall delivery of care from the patient's perspective to ensure the best treatment for all of our guests."

Cleverley and Associates conducts an annual nationwide evaluation of more than 3,000 hospitals. This evaluation is used for objective assessment and includes four key areas of evaluation:

  • Financial viability and plant reinvestment
  • Cost structure
  • Charge structure
  • Quality performance (new category established in 2009)

The new criterion was developed to provide a more accurate comparison of healthcare facilities in regard to their quality of care. The evaluation also highlights hospitals operating with a high degree of community value, defined as those that offer reasonable costs and use a strong financial position to reinvest back into the provision of care at their facility. Five-star ratings are awarded based on the attainment of a top 20 percent ranking among the hospitals examined in the study.

"The index includes both financial measures, as well as, quality measures compared to peer hospitals across the nation. The attainment of this recognition is a result of our staff delivering quality care in a cost effective manner," said Mark Perry, chief financial officer for AMC. "Adventist Health's employees and physicians were instrumental in earning this recognition and we’re pleased to see their hard work recognized."

Upholding its commitment to serving the needs of its community, AMC recently unveiled its new 181,000 square foot Pavilion. The Pavilion includes an expanded emergency department, state-of-the-art Northwest Regional Heart Center, and oncology services. AMC's Northwest Regional Heart Center treats 33 percent of all ambulance transported cardiac arrest patients in Multnomah County.

According to Carolyn Kozik, quality resources director for AMC, "Adventist Medical Center understands that excellence in delivering quality care is only part of the equation. Patients and family members expect, and deserve, an equally high level of compassion, communication, respect, and comfort. It is our goal to provide care that patient's can have faith in."

Cleverley and Associates is an independent, professional service organization specializing in healthcare information services. Each CVI criteria contains metrics that compare a hospital’s performance to an appropriate peer group. The combined performance in each area is the Community Value Index® score. Cleverley and Associates created the CVI to measure the value a hospital provides to its community.
