Dr. Balme is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with over 40 years experience in general orthopedics, specializing in joint replacement surgery. He utilizes a variety of treatments and interventions to help alleviate symptoms prior to the consideration of surgery. If symptoms do not respond adequately to non-operative measures, then Dr. Balme will discuss with the patient the benefits as well as the potential risks of surgery and the expected post-operative course. By treating joint conditions and performing reconstructive and restorative surgery, Dr. Balme helps patients regain their strength and mobility - returning them to a normal, active lifestyle.
A native of Portland, Dr. Balme completed an undergraduate degree at Yale University. After a brief stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, he pursued his MD at Yale Medical School. After completing his internship and a year of general surgery at OHSU, Dr. Balme served two years in the US Navy, one year in Vietnam and the second at Oaknoll Naval Hospital. He completed his orthopedic residency at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Balme is a member of the following societies:

Dr. Balme joined Adventist Health Medical Group with a robust orthopedic surgery experience after serving the Klamath Falls, Oregon, area for over 37 years. He has volunteered his expertise in South Africa, Honduras, Cambodia and Central City Concern in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Balme has two grown children. He enjoys Portland’s thriving performing arts community as well as traveling with his wife and fishing.
