Articulation Errors
- Not talking as clearly as others their age
- Unfamiliar listeners have a difficult time understanding the child
- Unable to combine sounds into words, but can produce sounds alone
- Noticeable "lisp"
- School age child: cannot produce sounds, or difficulty with certain
sounds, such as "R, S, L, TH, CH, SH"
Language Problems
- Expresses themselves more poorly than other children their age
- Difficulty following directions
- Using a limited variety of words
- Inappropriate or off-target responses to questions (especially "wh"
questions)
- Relies on "scripted" (memorized) sentences
- Difficulty with grammar or sentence structure
- Takes language more literally than other children their age
- Frustration/anger because they are not being understood
- Decreased social interaction with peers
- Poor eye contact
- Repetition of information/questions given to them
Tongue Thrust
- Open-mouth posture
- Tongue is visible at the front of the mouth or between teeth during
swallow
- Dental malocclusions
Fluency (Stuttering)
- Repetition of initial sounds, syllables or words
- Prolongation of sounds/syllables
- Silent pause during speech
