The role of this procedure is to evaluate your breast tissue for any
abnormalities including cysts or other benign abnormalities and malignancy. When
there are specific symptoms, such as a breast lump, nipple discharge or unusual
changes in the breast a "Diagnostic Mammogram" is performed. If you
are having specific breast concerns, it is important to see your physician for a
physical breast exam and the physician can order a diagnostic mammogram and
possibly a breast ultrasound.
General Information
We want to make your waiting time as pleasant as possible. Although
we do not anticipate a delay in your schedule appointment, consider bringing
your favorite magazine, book or iPod to help you pass the time should an
unanticipated delay occur. For your safety, please leave your jewelry and
valuables at home.
Preparation
It is important that the imaging physician have any previous mammograms
available for comparison when reading your current study. Please bring any
previous mammogram films with you on the day of the exam.
It is suggested that you do not schedule your mammogram one week prior to
your menstrual cycle (period) as your breasts are usually very sensitive at this
time.
It is also important that you do not wear deodorant or talcum powder on the
day of your exam.
What to Expect
The staff will review your personal history info prior to your exam. The
technologist will add additional information as necessary. You will change into
a patient gown, removing your clothes from the waist up. Once in the exam room,
two pictures of each breast will be taken. If this is a follow-up to a screening
mammogram, only one breast may be imaged, and it could be more than two
pictures. The pictures are taken while applying
pressure to your breast. Although the pressure may be uncomfortable, it is
essential to obtain quality pictures.
You exam will take approximately 45 minutes. Upon completion of your exam,
the technologist will review the images and you will be released.
Please note: The technologist will review your images with the imaging physician
prior to sending you home. If necessary, additional films may be taken. Don't
worry if the radiologist asks for more pictures of your breast. Artifacts
associated with folds in your breast tissue or blood vessels in your breast may
require additional magnification (enlarged) view or ultrasound to clearly see
all aspects of normal breast tissue. We will make every attempt to give you
verbal results before you leave.
After Care
There are no post exam instructions. A radiologist will read your study and the
results will be sent to your physician, usually within 48 hours. In most cases,
the radiologist will review your study with you on the day of your exam.
Additionally, you will receive a letter in the mail confirming the information
the radiologist provided you on the day of your exam. Your physician will
discuss these findings with you and explain what they mean in relation to your
health.
