What is Hospice?
Hospice is a special kind of care for dying people and their families. It is a
philosophy of care that recognizes that death is a natural part of life. It is
not intended to hasten nor prolong the dying process. In essence, it is care
that focuses on the patient's, and even their families, psychosocial, emotional,
physical and spiritual needs.
Why Become a Hospice Volunteer?
If you enjoy spending time with people and consider yourself a good listener,
you might have what it takes to be an Adventist Hospice volunteer. That's
because volunteers are an integral part of the Adventist Hospice team. They
provide emotional support by being a caring friend, offering companionship and
practical support in the form of meal preparation, yard work, light
housekeeping, and shopping for groceries. They are also trained as Story
Keepers, a program where they assist in recording a patient's life story. They
can also be involved in office or clerical tasks, fundraising efforts and
special programs and/or projects. There is no need for medical training or
background to be a volunteer.
